Goal Seek

Goal Seek = Excel tool you can use to recalculate an array of numbers to yield a predetermined value by changing one cell.

Go to Tools in Excel, open Goal Seek.

Example.
Management are studying a capital project forecast and they want to achieve a minimum net present value of $80,000. The capital outlay is $100,000.
What periodic cash flows are required at a discount rate of 8.5% p.a. to achieve this result?

Select Goal Seek:
Set the cell containing the sum of cash flows, to Value = 80000, by changing the cell containing the periodic cash flow amount.
Press OK. The solution is Periodic cash flows must be 27,433.39 or greater.
